Life Sketch

Jennifer Emelda Gibbons was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad West Indies on October 29, 1948 to Leo Belgrave and Agatha Hernandez.

On October 27, 1969, Jennifer married Alvin Gibbons and then relocated to the United States to reside in Brooklyn, New York.  From this union, they were blessed with four beautiful children: Clyde, Alvin Jr., Roland, and Nicole.  Jennifer was very proud of her family.  She would talk endlessly about the accomplishments of her children and her grandchildren. Everyone she encountered knew of her family and the intricacies of their lives.  She was especially proud of her granddaughter Niyah-Nicole, who was her pride and joy.

“Jenny”, as she was affectionately called, laughed easily and knew no strangers. She accepted everyone with love.  Everyone who had the chance of knowing her knew her for her thoughtfulness and kindness.  “Jenny” had a very special gift for her knowing and appreciating the finer things in life.  She displayed her gifts in areas such as cooking, entertaining friends, and in her coordinated style of dressing.

“Jenny” had an incredible love of life.  Between enjoying her family and the ability to cook to her hearts delight, “Jenny” was able to feed many people and touch many hearts.  Everyone loved her cooking.  It was known that when a person came to “Jenny’s” house, they were leaving with their ”belly filled and a plastic container” of her delicious cooking. She was also a No. 1 fan of Pantonic Steel Orchestra, Inc., the steelband in which her daughter Nicole has been a loyal member for many years.

On March 4, 2006, Jennifer was involved in a hit and run accident on her way home from dialysis treatment.  Jennifer fought long and hard for a year and finally succumbed to her injuries.  With God’s

grace before passing, Jennifer was able to see all her loved ones and let them know that “It is Well.”

On Saturday, April 21, 2007, Jennifer Emelda Gibbons departed this life.  Her memory lives on in all the lives that she touched and now leaves behind.

Jennifer leaves to cherish her memory: her children, Clyde, Alvin Jr., Roland, Nicole, and Sharon Cato (adopted daughter); mother, Agatha Hernandez; stepfather, Vincent Hernandez; sister, Margaret Morman of North Carolina; brother, Kenneth Payne of Tampa, FL; Carl James of Ontario, Canada (step brother); daughter-in-law, Latosha Gibbons; grandchildren, Scott, Clyde Jr., Cineve, Steve Jr., Kenya, Stevon, Niyah-Nicole, Jordan, and Sahara; cousins, Claude Glasgow and Angela Glasgow; nieces, Natashia, Carla, Natasha and Josann; nephews, Derek, Dexter, Eddie, Kenny and Andre; dear friends, Richmond Forde and Gloria.  In addition, she leaves a host of relatives and friends.
